Common questions
What is a reasonable late fee for freelancers?
1 to 1.5% per month (12–18% APR) is the common standard, often with a flat-fee alternative like $25. Whatever you choose, put it in writing before the work starts — a fee printed on the invoice is a policy, a fee invented after is a fight.
Can I charge a late fee if it was not on the invoice?
It is much harder to enforce. Your strongest position is agreed terms upfront: include the late-fee clause on the invoice or contract. Some jurisdictions also cap late fees, so check local rules.
How is a late fee actually calculated?
Simple interest: amount owed × annual rate × days late ÷ 365, plus any flat fee, minus any grace period. A $2,500 invoice 45 days late at 18% APR accrues about $55.
